According to the information from the calcium propionate manufacturer, on August 8, 2019, according to the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), at the request of the European Commission, the European Union Research Group on Animal Feed Additives and Products (FEEDAP) made scientific comments on the safety and effectiveness of Bacillus licheniformis DSM 32457 as a silage additive.

After evaluation, the FEEDAP team concluded that the additive was safe for target species, animal feeders and the environment. Due to the lack of data, its effectiveness is uncertain.

Bacillus licheniformis is a common gram-positive thermophilic bacteria in soil. The bacteria can also be found in the feathers of birds, especially ground-dwelling birds (such as finches) and aquatic birds (such as ducks), especially in their chest and back feathers. The optimum temperature for enzyme secretion was 37 C. It may exist in the form of spores, thus resisting harsh environments; in good environments, it may exist in a growth state. The bacteria can adjust the imbalance of bacterial flora to achieve therapeutic purposes. It can promote the body to produce antimicrobial active substances and kill pathogenic bacteria. It can produce anti-active substances and has a unique biological oxygen capture mechanism, which can inhibit the growth and reproduction of pathogenic bacteria.
